A fuel tank, alternatively known as a petrol tank, is designed to securely store flammable liquids. While any container for fuel may be referred to as such, the term commonly refers to a component in an engine system where fuel is stored and delivered (via a fuel pump) or released (under pressurized gas) into the engine. Fuel tanks come in various sizes and complexities, from the tiny plastic tank of a butane lighter to the intricate multi-chambered cryogenic Space Shuttle external tank.
