This is a replica of a museum specimen from St. Louis, Missouri. The Cahokia culture flourished as early as the 10th century, eventually becoming the dominant settlement in the Mississippian culture around 1050 AD. Over several centuries, the population at Cahokia swelled to an astonishing 40,000 people. The primary city center covered approximately 6 square miles, where hundreds of mounds were constructed. Although their settlements and villages dwarfed those found in the Verde Valley of Central Arizona, they also abandoned their settlement around 1400 AD. Their legacy remains evident in advanced knowledge of astronomy and geometry.
