FS1833 Palatki Grotto, Panel 9 Detail
sketchfab
This is a small area of rock art panel 9 at Grotto Alcove, Palatki Heritage Site in Red Rock District of Coconino Forest, northwest of Sedona, Arizona. A complex area of superimposed petroglyph scratches from different cultures and ages is visible here, including probable Archaic, Sinagua and Yavapai or Apache pictographs. The rock surface is flaking off in some areas and white patches are not paint but rather carbonate fracture filling almost parallel to the rock face. This site is part of an ongoing project to document at-risk sites and rock art, as well as evaluate potential pre-Archaic imagery in Verde Valley. More information about Red Rock District of Coconino Forest can be found on websites such as sedonaredrocktrails.org and fs.usda.gov/recmain/coconino/recreation. Volunteer opportunities in Coconino Forest, including 3D model creation and other projects, are available through friendsoftheforestsedona.org.
