The stunning marble portrait, a recent addition to the Louvre's collection, is a masterpiece crafted by Edme Bouchardon in 1736. This breathtaking work of art captures the likeness of Frédéric de La Tour du Pin, the Marquis of Gouvernet, who lived from 1694 to 1775. The marble itself bears Bouchardon's signature and date, 1736, a testament to his skill as a sculptor. When it was first exhibited at the Salon in 1738, the piece was hailed as "Donned with antique taste" in the salon's brochure. Considered a one-of-a-kind portrait bust by its creator, this sculpture is recognized as a pioneering work of neoclassic portraiture in the history of sculpture. After being cherished within the family studio for centuries, the masterpiece was finally brought to the public eye in June 2012 and has been on permanent display at The Louvre in Paris ever since.
