FruitFly trap (Drosophila Melanogaster)

FruitFly trap (Drosophila Melanogaster)

August / September is the fruit fly season. Your kitchen can be overrun with them in just a half day, with the invasion lasting for up to a week.... (Did you know that the fruit fly is actually one of the most agile insects in flight?) They are drawn to a wide variety of food sources, including fruit. If you leave wine or other liquids in a glass and stack fruit on top, placing a trap over it will reveal the flies' natural behavior - they'll approach, walk towards the holes, climb inside... and never escape again. You can later dispose of the contents of the glass by emptying it into the garden for any surviving flies. Alternatively, you might choose to reuse or repurpose your catch in some other way. Incidentally, did you know that a single fried mosquito could provide enough protein for up to 11 tailors? So, while catching fruit flies may not be the most exciting activity, there is certainly potential value in it. It's worth noting that the little piles of dead flies typically face downwards.
