A swift way to set up a small canning jar is to make a simple fruit fly trap. By adding some apple vinegar and just one drop of dish soap, the fruit flies will be drawn in but unable to escape. Last time I attempted this method, I caught more than I expected, as it turned out there were many more fruit flies around than I initially thought.
