Fruit fly trap

Fruit fly trap

thingiverse

This is a clever device for capturing fruit flies (Drosophila), which are drawn in by fruit left out in the open. To use this device, grab a cup, tumbler or jar made of clear glass or transparent plastic. Tailor the dimensions of the fruit fly trap to fit snugly over the opening and adjust its height to about two-thirds of the jar's inner depth. Place a small piece of ripe banana at the bottom of the glass - bananas work exceptionally well with fruit flies, in my experience. Close the jar with the fruit fly trap in place. The fruit flies are lured by the scent of the banana, crawl through the tiny opening in the jar to reach the banana, but then can't find their way back out of the jar. The next day, or as soon as the banana has dried up, take the jar outside and release the fruit flies there. If you prefer to kill the fruit flies, you can add some dishwashing liquid to the trap and fill the glass with water.
