A series of innovative modifications transforms a standard X9E tray radio into a highly accessible device for modelers with severe physical disabilities, enhancing control and convenience. This custom setup enables users to easily access the left-hand joystick. To achieve this accessibility, several key changes are made to the standard radio. The original left-hand joystick is carefully removed from inside the transmitter, along with its metal ring. A blank plug is then inserted into the resulting hole. The joystick itself is re-housed in a slide-fit enclosure that securely attaches to the transmitter using a hot shoe. This hot shoe replaces the standard palm rests and utilizes the same bolt pattern as the original design. To ensure flexibility, multiple holes are strategically placed on the side of the radio, allowing for precise positioning of the joystick. The extended wires from the joystick are connected via a Multiplex plug, enabling users to easily remove the enclosure while maintaining compatibility with the standard transmitter. This thoughtful design allows the radio to still fit snugly in its carry case, albeit requiring an additional protective cover for the extended box. Furthermore, a hot shoe is integrated into the back of the transmitter, facilitating easy docking onto a tripod crafted from 20 x 20 mm extrusion. When docked, this setup perfectly aligns with a printed bracket attached to the wheelchair, effectively distributing the weight of the entire transmitter and ensuring a stable operating experience.
