The McLaren MP4/9, designed by Neil Oatley for the 1994 F1 season, was driven by Mika Häkkinen and Martin Brundle under Marlboro McLaren Team. Due to new rules emphasizing driver skills, several aids were banned; the Peugeot A4 V10-powered MP4/9 had engine reliability issues initially, with both drivers retiring from first two races due to failures. The 760 bhp A6 V10 was then introduced, leading Häkkinen to a 3rd place at San Marino and Brundle to a 2nd at Monaco; however, it was dubbed as 'hand grenade' due to frequent engine failures in tests, qualifiers, and races. Peugeot finally achieved reliability with the engine in Italy.
