In the 17th century, warships were built with speed and maneuverability in mind, earning them the description "frigate-built." These vessels could carry their main batteries on a single deck or two decks, with smaller guns positioned on the forecastle and quarterdeck. The term was generally used for ships too small to stand in battle lines, although early line-of-battle ships were sometimes referred to as frigates when built for speed. In the 18th century, full-rigged frigates were square-rigged on all three masts, designed for speed and agility. They had lighter armaments than warships and were used for patrolling and escort duties. According to British Admiralty definitions, frigates were rated ships of at least 28 guns, with main armaments mounted on a single continuous deck.
