Frieze from the Temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis [4]

Marble relief from the West Frieze of the Temple of Athena-Nike: Greeks clash in bitter combat, perhaps the epic Battle of Megara, a pivotal moment in history dating back to 458 BC. The diminutive temple of Athena Nike was constructed on the site of an earlier revered sanctuary. Unlike the majestic Parthenon, it employed the more refined proportions of the Ionic order of architecture, exuding elegance and poise. Strategically situated atop a dramatic high position overlooking the Athenian Acropolis from the west, adjacent to the entrance, its grandeur is breathtaking. The external frieze showcases a series of intense battle scenes involving the Greeks locked in fierce combat with their adversaries. Like much of the temple itself, the friezes were meticulously dismantled and skillfully reused to build fortifications during late medieval times.
