Marble relief from the South Frieze of the Temple of Athena-Nike: Greeks engage fierce battle against Persians, commemorating perhaps the Battle of Marathon, 490 BC. The little temple of Athena Nike stands proudly on the site of an earlier shrine, its slender proportions a departure from the Parthenon's grandeur. Strategically positioned at the edge of the Athenian Acropolis, it gazes westwards towards the entrance, drawing the eye inexorably to its dramatic presence. The external frieze is a dynamic sequence of battle scenes, showcasing the Greeks in fierce combat against their enemies. Like much of the temple itself, these magnificent reliefs were dismantled and repurposed to fortify the city during late medieval times.
