Battle between Greeks and Persians, north frieze of Temple of Athena Nike, Acropolis, Athens, circa 425-421 B.C.\r\nThe small temple of Athena Nike stood proudly on the site where an earlier shrine once existed. Unlike the grand Parthenon, it employed the more refined proportions of the Ionic order of architecture. From its dramatic high position looking westwards from the edge of the Athenian Acropolis, next to the entrance, it commanded a striking view.\r\nThe exterior frieze is composed of a series of intense battle scenes involving Greeks and their enemies. Like much of the temple, the friezes were dismantled and reused to build fortifications during late medieval times.\r\n \r\nThis object is part of "Scan The World".
