Fridge Temperature controller enclosure w/ rear outlets
thingiverse
I converted an old chest freezer into a fridge by installing a temperature controller. It now uses about 90-95% less electricity than a standard upright refrigerator. The entire conversion cost me under $20. Here is the link to a more expensive controller: http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects/Conservation/FreezerConversion/FreezerConversion.htm This printed part allows me to perform the conversion without making any permanent changes to the freezer, except for the two holes in the lid where it mounts. The fridge plugs into the outlet at the back of the box, and the digital display is located in the front. I'm using the STC-1000 digital temperature controller, which I purchased from eBay for $10-15 USD. You can also find this outlet online: Cooper Wiring Devices 125-Volt 15-Amp White Duplex Electrical Outlet ($1 USD). http://www.lowes.com/pd_70684-334-270W-SP-L_1z0yt2jZ1z10xli__?productId=1098367&pl=1 I've been using this setup for years without any issues, so I don't see the need to invest in a more expensive controller. If you're like me, though, you might want to keep a spare controller handy, just in case. A $10 replacement is cheaper than losing your food because you're waiting for a new controller to arrive. Unfortunately, I didn't use OpenSCAD when designing this project. You can find the Sketchup files online. Post-Printing After printing the enclosure and lid, install the temperature controller and outlet. Make sure to wire the outlet before installing it, and run all the wires through the correct holes before connecting them. I mounted mine in the right rear corner of the lid of my freezer (now a refrigerator). This way, I can easily see if it's working properly and if it has power.
