In the middle of the 13th century, the castle is first mentioned in written records. Ceramic finds from the 12th century suggest that the castle is at least 100 years older than this date. It belonged to the Lords of Schauenburg, who died out in the middle of the 14th century. The building was damaged by a major earthquake in Basel in 1356 but later rebuilt. After several changes in ownership, the castle became a ruin at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1813, an observation pavilion was erected on the highest point of the ruin. The ruin is privately owned and not publicly accessible.
