French horn hand rest
thingiverse
This piece is designed to alleviate pressure on your pinky when playing the French horn. It was created specifically for my Conn 28D, a brass version of the Conn 8D, but may be suitable for various types of French horns. To use it, print the piece in PLA and submerge it in near-boiling water until pliable. Carefully wrap it around the handrest section of your horn, ensuring one of the holes aligns with the existing pinky ring. For added protection, consider covering your horn with foil or a similar material before applying the piece. Once cooled, the plastic retains its shape effectively. To optimize comfort and performance, I recommend pairing this piece with a leather handguard from Amazon. Cut out space for the nub of plastic that rests between your thumb and forefinger on the knuckle to ensure a snug fit. Refer to accompanying pictures for a clear visual guide. By redistributing pressure away from your pinky, you'll find it easier to move your ring finger freely (as they share an anatomical tendon). This design adjustment will also contribute to overall comfort during playing sessions. Even I still have my pinky in the original ring out of habit, but the horn no longer relies on it for support. Happy playing!
