French Cleat Cam Lock

French Cleat Cam Lock

thingiverse

This is a cam locking knob to lock cleats to a French cleat wall hanging system. There is a handle for turning by hand, and a coin slot as well in case it gets stuck and you need more leverage. There are two designs, one inches, and the other mm. The inch version coin slot fits a US quarter, while the mm version fits a 1 Euro coin. They are nominally designed for 0.5in and 10mm thick cleats and hangers. Two drawings are attached showing the bore hole sizes, the depth of the counterbore, and the offset from the bottom of the wall cleat to the center of the Cam Lock. The hanger and the hanger cleat must be assembled after inserting the locking knob, and thus retains it permanently without additional fasteners. For other cleat thicknesses scale the axial direction of the part to fit any thickness. It is designed for cleats and hangers that are the same thickness, and the counterbore depth at half that thickness. As long as you maintain that relationship, any board thickness can be used with a scale factor for the cam knob. Using the inches version, scale only the axial direction by .75 for 3/8", 1.25 for 5/8", 1.5 for 3/4" thickness boards. Using the mm version, scale only the axial direction by 0.8 for 8mm, 1.2 for 12mm, 1.5 for 15mm, etc.
