FreeTrack, an open-source software, offers cost-effective optical head tracking for applications and games that closely resembles its commercial counterpart, TrackIR. By attaching infrared LEDs to a hat or clip and using any webcam to track their points, real-time position data is provided to games like ARMA II and DCS: World, enabling users to freely explore their environment. The precision of the headtracking depends on accurate entry of LED positions in the software; otherwise, performance may suffer. More details are available at free-track.net. To use this point model as a precise platform for mounting infrared LEDs to a hat, print it with supports, ensuring only the top LED mount needs one. Solder LEDs and an appropriate resistor to your power source, then attach 5mm infrared LEDs in each hole. Configure FreeTrack software with optimal camera settings and update point model information using the recommended dimensions (http://www.free-track.net/images/3pointscapDIM.png). Note that a fan may be needed during printing of the top LED's arm, and support material must adhere to the print bed. Cleaning with rubbing alcohol helps; keeping the bed hot also assists. Special thanks go to the DCS A-10 subreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/hoggit) and FreeTrack for making this possible.
