The Human Genome Project is a major international research effort with the goal of mapping out all of the genes on the 23 pairs of human chromosomes. The project began in 1990 and was completed in April 2003, two years ahead of schedule. It has been estimated that the human genome contains about 30,000 to 40,000 genes, which is fewer than expected and many are similar to those found in mice.
