François Edouard Joachim Coppée, a renowned French poet and novelist, was born on January 26, 1842, in the vibrant city of Paris to a dedicated civil servant father. After attending the prestigious Lycée Saint-Louis, he embarked on a career as a clerk in the ministry of war, quickly gaining recognition for his poetic talents within the Parnassian school. Coppée's first published verses appeared in 1864, marking the beginning of an illustrious writing journey. In 1869, his debut play, Le Passant, received widespread acclaim at the esteemed Odéon theatre, followed by two more notable short dramas: Fais ce que dois (1871) and Les Bijoux de la délivrance (1872). These poetic masterpieces, inspired by the tumultuous Franco-Prussian War, left a lasting impression on audiences.
