The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial was masterminded by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, finishing up in 1997. Spanning a massive 7.5 acres and stretching 800 feet along the southwest bank of the Tidal Basin, this tribute is comprised of four distinct rooms, each representing one of Roosevelt's four terms in office, plus an introductory room that was added in 2001 to fill a glaring omission - the lack of direct mention of his disability throughout the memorial. To rectify this oversight, the National Organization on Disability stepped up with funding for the prologue room addition. A striking bronze statue, crafted by California artist Robert Graham, showcases Roosevelt seated confidently in his specially designed wheelchair - a kitchen chair reimagined with bicycle-style wheels in the front and smaller wheels at the back that replaced the traditional legs, showcasing his ingenuity and adaptability.
