Frankenstein's monster is a fictional character who first appeared in Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. In this novel, Shelley compares the monster's creator, Victor Frankenstein, to the mythological figure of Prometheus, who fashioned humans out of clay and gave them fire. Mary Shelley described Frankenstein's monster as a towering 8-foot-tall creation with ugly features, its translucent yellowish skin stretched so tightly over its body that it barely concealed the underlying network of arteries and muscles. The creature's eyes shone like wet lanterns in the dark, while its flowing black hair framed its black lips and prominent white teeth.
