Joseph-François Garnier was born in 1755 in Lauris, Vaucluse, where his family of modest means lived. His father made shoes on the Place Jean d'Autan, while his uncle, a skilled bassoonist, brought him to Paris to study the oboe. In 1769 Garnier joined the Royal Academy of Music's orchestra, playing both oboe and flute. He played with this orchestra for over three decades, from 1775 to 1808, earning a grand reputation. During his time in the orchestra, Garnier performed at the Concert Spirituel public concert series as solo oboist from 1787 to 1791, often playing his own compositions. From 1792, he taught oboe at the National Guard and became close friends with violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer. In fact, Kreutzer dedicated his oboe concerto to Garnier and they gave its first performance together. Garnier also joined the National Conservatory of Music in 1795 as one of five professors of oboe. He dominated at the Conservatoire and was called "the savior of the French school of oboe during the Revolution."
