Who is being depicted? Skilurus or Scylurus was a renowned king of Scythia during the 2nd century BC. As the son of a king and the father of a king, he held a unique position in his dynasty, although the relationship between his reign and that of his predecessors remains unclear. His kingdom encompassed the lower reaches of the Borysthenes and Hypanis rivers as well as the northern part of Crimea, where his capital, Scythian Neapolis, was situated. Technical/Specification about the statue A stele is a stone or wooden slab, typically taller than it is wide, erected in ancient Western culture to commemorate various occasions. Often used for funerary or commemorative purposes, stelae frequently bear text and/or ornamentation on their surface. The design of these slabs may include inscriptions, carved reliefs, or painted decorations. In modern times, traditional Western gravestones can be considered the equivalent of ancient stelae, although this term is rarely applied in contemporary contexts. Similarly, non-Western cultures use various terms to describe stelae-like structures, and the words "stele" and "stelae" are primarily used in archaeological contexts to refer to objects from Europe, the ancient Near East, Egypt, China, and occasionally Pre-Columbian America. More about the artist The artist responsible for creating this work remains unknown.
