Ancient relic, 3rd century Italian masterpiece, carved from a single block of marble, now displayed in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire within Brussels' majestic Cinquantenaire Museum. A stunning fragment of a sarcophagus bowl, it captures the essence of a bygone era. At its center, a bust of the deceased gazes to the left, his left arm resting effortlessly on the armrest of his ornate seat. Behind this solemn figure, a delicate drapery known as a parapetasma subtly frames the scene. The position of the arms suggests that the deceased held a rotulus, an unrolled roll of papyrus, in his hands - a poignant detail characteristic of scholar effigies from ancient times.
