Fragment of Nemesis
myminifactory
This is a replica of a broken head made from Parian Marble of an entire statue of Nemesis. The mold still shows perforations at the top of the head for the attachment of a metal diadem. The original is stored in The British Museum (1820,0513.2). Although the rest of the original Greek statue has not been preserved, numerous Roman copies were created to mimic the cult statue of Nemesis that stood over life size. A statue of Nemesis at Rhamnus was described by Pausanias (Description of Greece, 1.33.2-8), where a temple dedicated to Nemesis once stood. The metal diadem is said to be adorned with deer and small images of triumph. In ancient Greek mythology, Nemesis ("the goddess of Rhamnous"), is the deity who enacts retribution against those who fall prey to hubris (arrogance before the gods). Another name for Nemesis is Adrasteia (or Adrestia), meaning "the unavoidable".
