Gautama Buddha (c. 563 BCE - c. 483 BCE) was a highly respected ascetic and sage who founded the teachings of Buddhism. He is believed to have lived in ancient India's eastern region between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE, teaching people to find a balance between sensual pleasures and extreme asceticism common in his time. Gautama later traveled extensively throughout other parts of eastern India, including Magadha and Kosala, sharing his teachings with those who sought enlightenment. In Buddhism, he is considered an enlightened teacher who achieved full Buddhahood and shared his insights to help beings end rebirth and suffering. The accounts of his life, sermons, and monastic rules were memorized by his followers after his death and passed down through oral tradition before being written down about 400 years later.
