Roman sculptors eventually dominated the art of crafting monumental and massive statues. Primarily these were larger-than-life depictions of emperors. As Roman emperors started claiming divinity, they became the central figure in colossal and idealized statues, often with the subject posed with an arm raised to the crowd and striking a commanding stance. Yet, by the end of the Empire, sculpture of figures tended to lack proportion, heads being disproportionately enlarged.
