Fragment of a funerary monument with equestrian battle
myminifactory
Athens/Chalandri, Greece acquired in 1845, features a marble sculpture created roughly around 400 BC. The depiction of an equestrian triumphantly riding over his adversary is accompanied by a laudatory epigram that extols the deceased from Phlya's Athenian community (demos) for displaying exceptional bravery and military prowess in battle. It's possible that a model for this work was inspired by a monument honoring fallen soldiers located within the state cemetery outside Athens' Dipylon Gate (demosion sema).
