Fragment of a Figure at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich
myminifactory
Only the torso, head, and arms remain of this figure, severely damaged by time and erosion. The head is slanted to the right, with the left arm extended upwards, the hand grasping the back of the head just above the right ear, while pointing downwards towards the floor. Visible grooves outline the fingers on the right hand. Facial features are meticulously crafted, showcasing a mouth agape, revealing only the top row of teeth, which are not fully defined. Two small holes pierce through the eyes, and another pair of holes are used to define the nostrils. A dark pigment is applied to accentuate the eyes and brows. A faint outline hints at the presence of breasts. The figure is constructed from terracotta with a grey glaze coating. Vibrant red pigment fills in the mouth, eyes, ears, surrounding the nose, elbows, and beneath the left arm. Black pigment covers the back of the head, right elbow, and various areas on the rear. The top section of the head and part of the back of the head, along with the left arm and lower half of the figure, are noticeably missing, indicating a hollow interior. This damage is clearly visible at the breaking points.
