The custom of placing statues at gravesites was widespread during the Archaic era. This partial sculpture originates from a standing Greek statue, known as a kouros, that once stood in the cemetery of Byzantion. Kouros is the term used today to describe free-standing ancient Greek sculptures depicting nude male youths. The word itself translates to "youth" or "boy," often referring to those of noble birth.
