Fragment from a frieze

Fragment from a frieze

myminifactory

The Neoclassical movement sought to revive and build upon the Renaissance's ambition to recreate and enhance Ancient Greek and Roman art forms. Upon closer inspection, this fragment from a frieze appears to date back only to the 18th century, rather than the 3rd, due to its use of stiacciato technique: the various levels of depth on the relief enable the viewer to distinguish multiple backgrounds. For instance, when gazing at the horses, one notices that the first one protrudes further from the stone than the second, a visual effect characteristic of this technique that flourished during the Italian Renaissance in the 14th and 15th centuries.
