Fractal Borg
thingiverse
This is a complex, fractal-based volumetric object with several floating parts and mechanical aesthetics. It's available in different formats such as RAW data (400x400x400 8-bit), PNG codec AVI (400x400x400) and isosurface meshes like PLY (1.9M polygons) and STL (smoothed, reduced to 990K polygons). This object forms part of my series on volumetric objects that showcase the differences between polygonal and volume-based representations for better 3D printing understanding. To learn more about the benefits of volume-based data structures in 3D printing, visit 40westdesigns.com/blog/?p=371 and read my post on Engineering.com here: engineering.com/3DPrinting/3DPrintingArticles/ArticleID/4523/2012-The-Beginning-of-the-End-for-Polygons.aspx.
