Played with summing up some sine functions to generate a polygon, then used it several times with linear_extrude to combine them into a twisted shape. Update: You will find two versions, one with Fourier and one with cycloidal shapes. The latter may be tricky with some values as it may turn out non-manifold due to the inner loops it produces. So you might need to experiment with the harmonics. Fourier is easier to play with.
