Human plans to rechart terrain 1m DSM LIDAR model of Fountains Abbey ruins. Fountains Abbey is a pivotal element in the garden scheme, providing a breathtaking culmination to the main vista and standing out on its own as an outstanding feature. As one of only a few Cistercian houses remaining from the 12th century, it offers an unmatched glimpse into the workings of a large religious institution at every level. Founded in 1132, Fountains Abbey quickly rose to become one of Britain's largest and wealthiest Cistercian abbeys before being shut down by Henry VIII in 1539 during the dissolution of the monasteries. The abbey was partially destroyed shortly after. Jacobean Fountains Hall is a remarkable example of its time, with some stone from the Abbey used in its construction. Its Elizabethan facade stands out and is further enhanced by a well-manicured garden with intricately trimmed hedges. The interior of the Hall has undergone multiple transformations to accommodate various uses, including a courthouse.
