This is a foundation stone with the coats of arms of the Contarini and Marcello clans. By 1420, outdated municipal charters had been revised. Nobles were relegated to secondary roles in governance, while actual power was concentrated in the hands of podestas (high-ranking officials) and captains - always handpicked from among Venice's elite aristocracy. In Captain Maffeo Contarini and Rector Jacopo Marcello's case, the city erected an inscription in 1481 as a testament to their tireless efforts.
