This statue represents fortitude, one of three statues believed to have been crafted for the Gaston de Foix monument in honor of the Duc de Nemours (1489-1512), commander of French forces in Italy. The three statues were created by skilled sculptors hired by renowned Italian artist Agostino Busti, also known as Bambaia, who oversaw the production of numerous figures for the monumental commission. Similar sculptures appear on a drawing often associated with this monument, demonstrating fortitude and charity as virtues suited to a warrior, conveying strength and compassion. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London holds the statue.
