Forteviot Ring Cross This fragment of sculpture was once part of an elaborate, ring-headed cross that stood independently, a distinctive form closely linked to Scotland's West Coast (particularly Iona) and Ireland. The piece is derived from one arm of the cross head, with a remaining stub of the ring projecting from its face. The design suggests a 10th-century origin. The precision and depth of the carving on this fragment demonstrate exceptional artistic skill. A short tenon indicates that the cross was constructed from multiple pieces of stone, a challenging technique pioneered in Iona. These stylistic and technical connections reinforce the bond with the heart of St Columba's cult. The decorative motif known as "key-pattern" originated in the Mediterranean world where it is associated with mazes. Insular Celtic artists revitalized it by placing it on a diagonal grid. The Picts showed a strong affinity for this motif, producing intricate designs that showcased their creativity.
