The Forte de São Lourenço do Bugio, also known as the Forte de São Lourenço da Cabeça Seca or simply the Torre do Bugio, is situated halfway between the waters of the Tejo River estuary and the direction of Cova do Vapor, Trafaria (located north in Setúbal District) and the town and municipality of Oeiras (located south in Lisbon District), in Portugal. It includes within its structure the Farol do Bugio. The location where it stands is a sandbank formed by the sedimentation of the river estuary, a result of the dynamic convergence of its waters with those of the Atlantic Ocean at the rhythm of tides. As the only one in the region with a surface above the tide line throughout the year, it has been given the toponymy of cabeço or dry head. The bugio toponym may be attributed, among other versions, to the French bougie (candle), due to the similarity between its circular structure and the original tower topped by a lighthouse, with a lit candle on its candelabra.
