The Conceição da Fortaleza of Araçatuba was the fourth and last fortification designed by Portuguese Brigadeiro José da Silva Paes. Built on Ilhota de Araçatuba between 1742 and 1744, the Fortaleza was the only one intended to protect the entrance to the South Bay of Santa Catarina Island. It also served as a prison on several occasions, including the republican period. In 1894, by ministerial determination on August 28, this fortification, which was also known as Forte da Barra do Sul, changed its name to Forte de Araçatuba. In its original project, it stands out that the main battery of circular cannons is located in the highest position of the complex. Despite the repairs that this Fortress suffered in 1780 and 1850, it was found quite ruined, according to a report from 1899. The Conceição da Fortaleza of Araçatuba was declared National Historic and Artistic Heritage in 1980.
