Human: (1752 - 1920), Frederiksted, St. Croix Fort Frederik, built by the Danish government in the mid-18th century, protected its interests in the Caribbean and safeguarded the western end of Saint Croix from European powers, pirate raids, and rival imperialist nations. Named after Frederick V of Denmark, who purchased the Danish West Indies in 1754. The original Fort St. James was located here in the 1640s. Briefly seized by Spain in 1650, then controlled by France before becoming part of Denmark. The present fort was finished in 1760 to prevent smuggling along Saint Croix's western shore. It claims to have been the first foreign installation to salute the U.S. flag in 1776. In July 1848, the Danish governor declared emancipation for all slaves in the Danish West Indies right here. In 1917, U.S. Marines occupied the fort as part of the Frederiksted Marine Barracks. The Marines moved to Fort Christian in 1920. The fort was later used for local government offices until 1973, then opened as a historic site in 1976 after restoration to its 1840s state. Admission fee applies.
