Fort Square, often referred to as Fort Square of Antibes, is a 16th-century star-shaped fort with four arrow-head shaped bastions. Located on the outskirts of Antibes, France, this impressive structure was built by Henri de Mandon and later redeveloped in the 17th century by the Marquis de Vauban. The Romans likely constructed the initial fortifications at Antibes, which were followed by the construction of a tower called la tour Saint-Florent around a preexisting chapel in 1553. King Henry III added four bastions to the existing structure in 1565, transforming it into Fort Square. The completion of this massive project took 25 years from its inception. Fort Square played a significant role during the French Revolution when Napoleon Bonaparte was briefly imprisoned here. Following the violent overthrow of Robespierre in July 1794, General Bonaparte was detained as a Jacobin sympathizer and held in Fort Square for ten days before being released due to the efforts of his friend and political ally, Antoine Christophe Saliceti.
