The genus Forsythia comprises shrubs and small trees from the Olive family, attaining heights of 1 to 3 meters (rarely up to 6 meters) with a bush width of up to 2 meters. Their gray-brown, rough bark houses simple or occasionally complex leaves (triple), which are oval-shaped with notches and measure between 2 and 15 cm in length, arranged oppositely on the stems. Forsythia plants display bright yellow, campanulate flowers with a four-bladed calyx and corolla featuring four lobes; these blooms are followed by fruit pods that open to reveal several winged seeds nestled within. Interestingly, Forsythia is an edible plant for caterpillars of certain butterfly species, such as the golden-eyed moth (Euproctis chrysorrhoea) and Naenia typica.
