Formicarium
thingiverse
This is my very first self-designed formicarium - and the first thing I ever uploaded. I encountered problems trying to precisely cut glass/acrylic plates, so I decided to design a formicarium that uses microscope slides instead. To assemble this formicarium, you will need: - 4x M3x8 screws - 17+ some extra (they tend to break) microscope slides I used the following slides, but they are standardized anyway: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00140J34E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 When assembling the formicarium, be careful not to break the microscope slides. The whole thing is designed to fit very tightly to avoid gaps. Double-check that there are no gaps when putting it together to prevent your ants from escaping. You will have to drill a small hole in one of the microscope slides to access humidification without removing the slides. I am currently testing the design with a small Lasius niger colony, and so far, it works great. I do not guarantee that the design is 100% escape-proof, but I don't see any chance for my ants to get out right now. I am working on an upgraded version with a removable nest to make winter rest easier.
