Former Phosphor Mine

On November 6th, 2016, I embarked on a guided tour from the abandoned city near Safaga in Egypt's Red Sea region as a curious tourist. The city earned its nickname "Ghost City" due to its past existence with approximately 17,000 residents before the phosphor mine closure in 1997. Economic reasons led to the mine's shutdown, resulting in the mass departure of the population. Our knowledgeable guide, born and raised in the city, provided an authentic experience as he showed us his family home, school, and other notable landmarks. This is a glimpse into one entrance of the mine, captured just minutes after sunset.
