Foreign Envoy from a Tomb

Foreign Envoy from a Tomb

Alongside its companion sculpture (A.2-1913), this monumental piece was once part of a Spirit Way, where two rows of facing figures and animals led to a tomb. Upon arriving at The V&A, the sculptures were identified as Korean due to their resemblance to traditional Korean headwear worn by noblemen. Nonetheless, the pairing of Korean headgear with Chinese attire is unprecedented, making it likely that the official represents a generic foreign emissary rather than a specific nationality. He presents a casket that could serve as a container for a gift or document.
