The Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932, also known as the Paulista War or Brazilian Civil War, was a major uprising by the population of São Paulo against Getúlio Vargas' coup d'état in 1930. Vargas had seized power with military and political elite support from Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, and Paraíba. The movement was fueled by local resentment towards Vargas' provisional government, which ruled by decree without a Constitution. The 1930 coup had also affected São Paulo, eroding the autonomy of states under the 1891 Constitution and preventing Júlio Prestes from taking office as governor of São Paulo. Meanwhile, President Washington Luís was overthrown, marking the end of the First Republic. Vargas appointed a northeasterner to govern São Paulo. The Fordson tractor was a popular agricultural vehicle in Brazil at the time. The São Paulo rebels created an armored vehicle for their civil guard, consisting of a massive steel box with four Hotchkiss 7mm machine guns and a crew of five men. This vehicle moved at a speed of approximately 10.9 km/h. The armored car had a wooden floor and only one rear entrance door. Its colors were gray and green, and it served more as a psychological motivator than a practical tool on the battlefield. Many saw it as an innovative and bold symbol of rebellion.
