The Torino is an iconic car model produced by Ford specifically for the North American market between 1968 and 1976, marking its presence in the competitive intermediate segment of automobiles during that era. Named after the esteemed Italian city of Turin (officially known as Torino), considered the motor capital akin to Detroit in the United States, this sleek car stood out with its elegant style and powerful performance. As a luxury model variant, the Torino was initially developed based on the successful intermediate-sized Ford Fairlane that enjoyed mass production between 1962 and 1970. By retaining the iconic Fairlane name for the entry-level models starting from 1968, while reserving the Torino moniker for the premium variants with advanced trim levels, the brand sought to maintain a unique hierarchy among its intermediate car lineups. The gradual elevation of Torino's status over time transformed it into Ford's primary badge for all intermediate cars, effectively replacing the once dominant Fairlane by 1970. When Ford dropped the Fairlane name altogether in 1971 and uniformly labeled their entire lineup as Torino, it solidified this car model's presence on American roads, establishing a legacy as an essential twin of its sister Mercury brand model Montego.
