Force fields, also called energy shields, force shields, defense shields, or deflector shields in speculative fiction, are energy barriers made from plasma, particles, or other forms of energy. They protect people, areas, and objects by acting as a wall that prevents certain forces from passing through. Often used in science fiction works, these fictional technologies function as an established fact rather than requiring explanation. In reality, scientists are researching real force fields to shield against radiation, while the concept dates back at least to the 1920s. It's a common feature in video games and movies, such as The War of the Worlds (1953) and Independence Day, and has been used as a superpower in comic books like those featuring the Invisible Woman or Violet Parr. Science fiction and fantasy explore various potential uses for force fields, including protective barriers for workers in space, walkable surfaces without bridges, quarantine areas during emergencies, fire extinguishers, shields against damage, temporary habitable spaces, and security measures. In some fictional works, energy shields can neutralize or reduce the impact of conventional weapons, energy, particle, and supernatural forces. Researchers are experimenting with using charged plasma bubbles to protect spacecraft from radiation and particles, while others aim to create a mini-magnetosphere bubble around a spacecraft to safeguard astronauts from cosmic rays. In 2015, Boeing was granted a patent for a force field designed to protect against shock waves generated by explosions, but no working models have been demonstrated yet.
