These ancient pottery vessels epitomize a pivotal era on the Southeast Asian mainland as communities began to cultivate crops, domesticate animals and establish settlements. The 2nd millennium BC marked a significant transition from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age, with its initial half heavily influenced by the Middle Kingdom of Egypt and Babylonia's rise to power. This period also saw the development of an alphabet, Indo-Iranian migration onto the Iranian plateau and Indian subcontinent, and the propagation of chariot warfare. The use of chariots led to violent population movements at the millennium's center, ultimately yielding a new order with Greek dominance over the Aegean and the emergence of the Hittite Empire. As the millennium drew to a close, the world transitioned into the Iron Age, accompanied by a steady increase in global population, reaching approximately 50 million around 1000 BC.
